Material & Manufacture
Phoenician baggy-shaped amphora variant. Flaring body with rounded concave base with a pronounced omphalos, narrow carination at shoulder/body junction, collar neck with rounded rim, small short vertical strap handles, D-shaped in section, from shoulder to 1/4 way down the body.
Orange clay with white and black and some red inclusions.
Slip? White surface color is probably due to intentional reduction during firing, though this finish is also called "white scum" by Docter in his Ph.D. thesis and subsequent publications (also personal communication).
Wheelmade. Body surface has been wiped with a rag. Sloppily made, blobs of waste clay, dents and blackened areas on body, handles handmade, roughly executed and askew due to the unwinding of the wheelmade amphora body, finger marks visible where handles join to the body. Ridge (dent) down one handle may be due to the vessel having been pushed against another when drying.
