DescriptionTransport amphora Class 2 Greco-Italic. Handles start very close to rim; very short spike toe on toe; worn on base; slender body; dents on lower bodies; dark fabric small reddish brown.Material & Manufacture
Greco-Italic transport amphora. Small slender but pear-shaped body tapering to a very short flaring toe with a spike on the end (broken), no characteristic carination ridge at end of sloping shoulders but change of plane visible through the breaks in the body, cylindrical slightly concave neck with flattened triangular-shaped rim, neck narrows toward the shoulder junction; opposing vertical handles with a ridge down the center, subrectangular in section, from just below the rim to mid-shoulder, curves up from upper attachment.
Dark red brown clay with numerous white, fine black and some shiny inclusions.
None; no slip, unstamped.
Wheelmade. Wet smoothed. Central depression in handles were made by the potter drawing his thumb or forefinger down in the wet clay. Thin walled (4.5 mm.). Dents on the lower body.
