DescriptionPlain white VI; transport amphora/jar probably Phoenician; 7th century or later; neck/rim varies from other 2 examples.
Material & Manufacture
Phoenician transport amphora/jar, also known as a torpedo-shaped or cylindrical jar/amphora, Gjerstad's Plain White VI Ware. Cylindrical torpedo-shaped body, though slightly waisted, with a flattened base/toe which is circular in plan (Diam. 2.2 cm.), pronounced carinated shoulder/collar extending well beyond the line of the body, miniscule vertical rim which tapers inward and has a scored ridge at the bottom edge, circular mouth; 2 opposing small leech-shaped handles with a pointed central ridge, made from a roll of clay, flattened on the lower interior, rise slightly above the carination to high on the body.
Brown/orange clay, poorly levigated, fine white, black and red inclusions.
Orange slip? Sloppy rag-smoothing of body.
Wheelmade. Very sloppy execution in general, smearing of the slip, wide messy handle attachments. Much mottling, yellow areas on the body up to the collar and rim, a result of firing and stacking in the kiln.
