Material & Manufacture
Bichrome III Ware bowl on a low foot also called a stemmed or pedestalled bowl. Slightly flaring cylindrical body, sharp carination at lower body tapering to a solid cylindrical foot, wide circular base with conical interior, ridge on upper body defines the steeply rounded, slightly flaring rim; opposing loop handles, horizontally placed near the carination, circular in section, they hug close to the body.
Well levigated beige/grey clay with fine black and larger white inclusions.
Cream slip on the exterior? Bichrome decoration in pink/purple red and grey black Exterior: black on and over the rim, wide red band extends to the ridge, panels of motifs on the "shoulder" divided by sets of vertical lines (4) sometimes called triglyphs or metopes, 2 swastikas, central motif filled with sets of 3 horizontal zig-zags, alternating grey black, red, grey black, black band at the base of the carination; Interior: wide red band encircling below the rim, then a set of 4 narrow bands which are repeated again at the outer edge of the base, then a very wide red band on the base, 4 narrow concentric circles with a tiny circle with a dot indicates the center of the base; Handles: painted all black, "moustache style" effect, black lines extend down from the handles onto the body as far as the carination and over another painted encircling band.
Wheelmade. Rim not circular in plan, dueto warping, "pulling-up" ridges in the interior, foot wheel-tooled. Lower body very smooth and shiny, due to rag smoothing? Sloppy paint work, see interior view photo; thin painted lines on the body, each side, from painting the tops of the handles; red paint drip line inside body. Uniform yellow cream exterior surface, interior has an orange tinge.
