Material & Manufacture
Terracotta votary statuette, small male head probably from a horseman or more likely a charioteer. Rounded head, thick neck, fine features of the face, pronounced brow-ridge, straight nose, rounded eyes, both lids indicated, thin line for the inset mouth, rounded cu rly beard; the figure wears a double wreath (stephane) of overlapping leaves around his head, the leaves are in 2 directions with a gap in the middle over the forehead, they are not attached to a band; his hairline is visible below the wreath.
Red-orange clay with white and black inclusions, fabric typical of that found at Kourion and the Temple of Apollo.
Remnants of very thick white slip but no traces of paint are visible.
The body (now missing) would have been hand-modeled, the face is molded, there are added details such as the wreath, which was made of large pellets of clay which were pressed onto the head before firing. The mold was quite new as the details of the face are very clear.
