Label TextThe Black Obelisk was a monument commemorating the military victories of Shalmaneser III (858–824 BC) in words and image. It was meant to remind all who saw it of the irresistible power of the Assyrian state. Each horizontal row shows a single episode divided into four panels, to be understood in sequence as one walked around the obelisk. Scenes illustrate valuable tribute, including exotic animals, being brought before the king. The second register shows Jehu, king of Israel, groveling before Shalmaneser.
