Label TextThese carved stone panels were among the stunning scenes of war that decorated Ashurnasirpal II's Northwest Palace. The sculptor here skillfully illustrated a large complicated scene in relatively little space by using multiple artistic techniques. The chariots appear in a simple profile, while the horses drawing them are stacked to allow the viewer to see all three animals. The "floating" corpses at the top represent the dead scattered into the distance. Soldiers march and kill their enemies in different registers, revealing additional depth of field. The city's defenders are shown at a scale far larger than the towers upon which they stand. The scene may be understood as a whole, or broken down into individual images of siege and conquest.
