Stela of Sargon II
CultureAssyrian
PeriodNeo-Assyrian
Dateca. 707 BCE
MediumBasalt (Plaster Reproduction)
Label TextThe king boasts of receiving tribute from the seven kings of Iadnana – the Assyrian name for Cyprus. Since basalt is not found on Cyprus, where the stela was discovered, it was probably carved on the mainland and brought to the island. Sargon appears in his royal garb with right hand raised in prayer. Above him are emblems of the eight deities to whom he prays. The presence of the Assyrian monument on Cyprus marks the western extent of Assyrian political power or diplomatic influence.
